In 16th and 17th century Mexico\, Purple Snail and Cochinelle Lice\, taken from cactus\, were used to create red pigment. This pigment was\, after silver and gold\, the most important export from the new world to Europe. As such\, the color red was almost exclusively worn by royalty and the clergy. ROT RED ROUGE exhibits many interpretations and uses of this primary color. Few colors are so ridden with meaning.  Depending on intensity\, associations to love\, anger\, danger\, joy\, power\, vitality\, warmth\, passion\, feminintiy\, blood\, etc.”

SUMMARY:Colour\, Light\, Space
DESCRIPTION:(…) The bearers of the light are Dietmar Brixy’s paintings\, which cannot be separated from the medium of paint. Brixy’s journey to the light\, via colour\, is defined by a masterful usage of thickly-applied impasto oil paint. The paint is delicately spread in shimmering modulations of colour\, layered on in stripes with a palette knife\, fiercely applied in gestural forms and brushstrokes. It evokes associations with natural phenomena\, their warm colours at play with infinities\, organic effects contrasting with crystalline painted surfaces. Flat shimmers of light appear\, like bright hopes leading out of a dense and mystical jungle of animated trees; a light that conceives a magical desire for an “over there”\, while having not the slightest knowledge of that longed-for place. \nThe form of presentation has a noticeable influence on the workings of these lush and luminous suggestions of colour. The exhibition space of the Coburg Kunstverein is windowless and uniformly lit\, a neutral container for artworks. The walls have no openings to disturb the impact of the pictures. No glimpse of real spaces\, no sight of the profane exterior world can disrupt the concentrated dialogue with the works. Only through the pictures themselves can a gateway to the outside be found. SUMMARY:Discover - Surprise - Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:(…) But “Surprise” also holds surprises for the spectator\, who is here immersed in stormy seas of paint\, in landscapes of caves\, in fantasy worlds full of magical\, primal forces. In ancient mythological scenarios. All is suffused with shimmering zones\, separated by moments of perished nature\, scattered through with awakening drives. We are stranded\, as once Odysseus was\, near the Sirens’ fatal shore. We are tempted\, befogged\, misled. We track through a haunted world of ballads. All somehow seems to pulse. As Goethe urged\, this is an art moved by the systole and diastole of the heartbeat. The images seem almost to erupt\, the paint itself to inhale and exhale. And so waves well up within it. We plunge into a cosmos of colour modulations\, from dark to dazzling bright. We gaze over the dangerous waters of a stalactite cave\, through to weathered columns and petrified life\, as Brixy boldly brings us through a wholly unexpected spectrum of colours and combinations.  \nOn our way to “Tomorrow”\, in “Surprise”\, we move through dense spaces\, teeming with concepts. Again and again\, the archaic “primal force of painting” thunders around us. In the storm of life. Did all this emerge from Brixy’s “Discover” paintings\, with their diffuse Edenic landscapes? Is there a hint of the “Big Bang” here? And hence the connection of content and form? Yes\, unquestionably. Astonishingly\, in these latest works\, Brixy’s powerful swirls give way to something else: a furious battle of the elements\, and then\, in turn\, a new becoming of light and colour. DESCRIPTION:(…) Nicht zuletzt branden deshalb Wellen auf. Schwappt ein aufgewühltes Farbspurenmeer aus Klein- und Großformaten. Tauchen wir ein in einen düster-grellen Farbmodulationskosmos. Blicken über gefahrenvolles Gewässer in Tropfstein-Höhlen\, mit verwitterten Säulen\, versteinertem Leben. Wir „wandeln“ nun durch malerische Ballungs-und-Wallungs-Bildräume. Wobei uns der Maler Brixy mutig durch ein völlig unerwartetes Farbkombinationsspektrum steuert. Hier trifft beispielsweise Violett auf Ockergelb und Türkis. \nSpannend: im rechten\, oberen Bildfeld scheint furios inszeniert eine archaische „Urkraft“ heranzurollen. DESCRIPTION:(…) Though the fig and palm leaves that Brixy occasionally presses directly into the paint can be clearly discerned in some of his works\, the references to nature and the garden in the new ‘Surprise’ series (from 2015) are sparser and less distinct. New colour spaces open up\, showing greater depth than before. The ‘Discover’ series depicts whole cosmogonies as interior worlds. Even though the paintings are still composed of many overlapping layers of colour\, their impasto quality and their plasticity have retreated in order to create room for painterly gestures.  \nThe result is a new tonality in which the dissonant colour palette of past work has been replaced by a much calmer one. Brixy surprises viewers with more visual harmonies. Opposing qualities – such as loudness and quietness\, tumult and calm\, stillness and movement – are more easily reconciled with one another than before.  It is as if the artist wanted to offer an encouraging antithesis to the disturbing social and political upheavals of the present.
