DESCRIPTION:(…) “Discover”\, the new series of works by Dietmar Brixy\, is all about exploring and discovering: understood as a creative\, productive journey of discovery and thus both the process of artistic creation and a visually exciting journey of exploration for us as viewers. From 28 September to 20 October 2012\, Brixy‘s Old Pumping Station in Mannheim-Neckarau was not only a spectacular showcase for the “Discover” series: flowing and gestural\, overflowing with hints of vegetation and oscillating between abstraction and representation. The glorious garden surrounding this neo-Gothic industrial structure once again provided the creative impetus for Brixy‘s lyrical\, impasto painting full of tension and new accents. \nIn the context of this trompe l‘oeuil of submerging and emerging\, of gesturally meandering streams of color\, dripping foliage and layering of color fields intentionally left empty\, Dietmar Brixy integrated the show of recent works by the renowned German metal sculptor Herbert Mehler (born 1949)\, with the awareness that Mehler‘s almost organic\, “cavex” sculptures made of Cor-Ten steel are the product of a “process of construction parallel to nature” (Kai Uwe Schierz). DESCRIPTION:(…) Rather\, here is a vision of nature that approaches us in the form of a monstrous\, primordial soup.  A formidable\, elemental force that has yet to assume any actual shape or organisation\, depicted before nature has taken on form. It is as though we are witnessing Creation in its very early phases\, in which biomass is still present as pure energy\, seared by flashes of lightning. Whether these organic forms are rivers\, branches\, serpents\, or powerful lightning bolts remains an open question\, and indeed\, they could be several of these at once\, as if the energy hasn’t settled on its form. What we see in these works is simply organic energy in visual form. I hope however that the artist can forgive me for saying that these paintings were naturally not created by the hand of God\, but by just one painter. And by saying ‘just one’\, I don’t mean that in a diminutive sense\, but rather as a compliment. \nSo what exactly are we looking at here? This isn’t God’s work\, but rather an artist’s. We see an artist in the act of creation. And the pictures\, of course\, are of a painter’s paradise. What we see here is a process of formation – the process of shaping the painting itself. The actual motif Brixy has selected for his images is the revelation of this generative process. His work demonstrates varied techniques\, and reveals the creation of these images in different phases. We can imagine Brixy applying paint with the brush\, smearing it\, building it up with the palette knife\, spreading it with his hands in different stages of relief. Thus\, it is not the finished image that is presented here\, but rather the process of formation – the process of becoming. \nGenerally speaking\, Brixy presents us with an overwhelming celebration of nature. One might think of Claude Monet’s final paintings in this regard. We are all familiar with Monet’s celebrated ‘Water Lilies’. The last images Monet painted are a grandiose celebration of nature that becomes perfectly abstract. Just like Monet\, Brixy paints pure biomass and organic energy. DESCRIPTION:“(…) In his latest paintings in the Eden series Dietmar Brixy transports us to Paradise. The extremely wide formats create a cinematic panorama effect and allow the viewer’s eyes to wander about in this Garden of Eden. However\, the landscape is not very gentle: an impenetrable jungle of colors challenges the senses. Rich color blurs seem to wobble through the picture like misty clouds changing color all the time. The iridescent color spectrum ranges from diverse greens to blues\, pinks and violets. SUMMARY:A Paradise of Colors and Forms
DESCRIPTION:(…) The painter Dietmar Brixy (*1961) is one of the most successful artists in the metro region. After completing his studies at the State Academy of Visual Arts in Karlsruhe\, he returned to his home town of Mannheim in 1991\, where he has developed a very sensual style located between abstract and figurative art: A color spills freely across the painting surface\, not only beautiful in itself but also in search of motifs usually reminiscent of plants and fruits. “Eden” is the evocative title of this exhibition\, a small but representative selection of Brixy’s works\, all of which ultimately refer directly or indirectly to the Bible story of the fall from Paradise. \nBut first a few words about the artist’s painting technique\, which involves a lengthy process for each work: He starts with an initial coat of paint\, an overall mixture of many colors. Once this coat has dried\, the artist adds another\, this time thickly layering the pigment with a palette knife or his bare hands\, developing a gestural-abstract painting style whose movement and intensive contrasts alone make it a visual feast. But that is not all: Brixy scrapes off part of this impasto layer to give it structure that can often be interpreted as representational motifs. The paint suddenly grows into the branches of a tree\, its bark\, leaves or fruit.
