DESCRIPTION:“(…) In his latest paintings in the Eden series Dietmar Brixy transports us to Paradise. The extremely wide formats create a cinematic panorama effect and allow the viewer’s eyes to wander about in this Garden of Eden. However\, the landscape is not very gentle: an impenetrable jungle of colors challenges the senses. Rich color blurs seem to wobble through the picture like misty clouds changing color all the time. The iridescent color spectrum ranges from diverse greens to blues\, pinks and violets. Bizarre rivers of color flash through the thick color fog like bolts of lightning as if they endeavored to send jerks of energy through this amorphous primeval paradise. Are we witnesses to the first steps of Genesis? A stage of existence before the real Garden of Eden was created\, before the world took shape from the seething biomass to form flowering meadows\, plants\, trees and fruits and become form? SUMMARY:A Paradise of Colors and Forms
DESCRIPTION:(…) The painter Dietmar Brixy (*1961) is one of the most successful artists in the metro region. After completing his studies at the State Academy of Visual Arts in Karlsruhe\, he returned to his home town of Mannheim in 1991\, where he has developed a very sensual style located between abstract and figurative art: A color spills freely across the painting surface\, not only beautiful in itself but also in search of motifs usually reminiscent of plants and fruits. “Eden” is the evocative title of this exhibition\, a small but representative selection of Brixy’s works\, all of which ultimately refer directly or indirectly to the Bible story of the fall from Paradise. \nBut first a few words about the artist’s painting technique\, which involves a lengthy process for each work: He starts with an initial coat of paint\, an overall mixture of many colors. Once this coat has dried\, the artist adds another\, this time thickly layering the pigment with a palette knife or his bare hands\, developing a gestural-abstract painting style whose movement and intensive contrasts alone make it a visual feast. But that is not all: Brixy scrapes off part of this impasto layer to give it structure that can often be interpreted as representational motifs. The paint suddenly grows into the branches of a tree\, its bark\, leaves or fruit. DESCRIPTION:Dietmar Brixy – 7 years art in “Old Pumping Station” \n(…) Maybe this explains the tempest and turbulence we see in both “Stormy Bamboo-Bubble” and “Busy Bamboo-Bubble”\, though in different ways: In “Stormy Bamboo-Bubble”\, we see the explosive power of vital energy as though through a microscope\, hinted at in the motif of bursting blossoms in a shaken glass. But might we not also recognize something of the artist’s soul in the intersections where the circling stalks cross? After all\, Dietmar Brixy says that the single thread running through all his works is the line: “The line lets me express all my emotions and sensitivities.” \nBy contrast\, in “Busy Bamboo-Bubble”\, bent bamboo stalks are crowded together\, overlapping and coiled in a frenzy of streaks of color too numerous to count\, thus intensified into the concentrated power of volume. The painting’s energy circles in perpetual motion\, like invisible lines of force in nature and certainly also like the painter’s unceasing associations with the abundance of natural forms. Back then\, almost every well-off feudal prince indulged in the luxury of having an orangery in his palaces and summer residences. The land of Arcadia was simply moved up a few degrees of latitude\, in defiance of the central European climate. This genius loci has inspired several exhibitions by the Kunstverein Schwetzingen in the past and is now experiencing a revival through the paintings of the Mannheim artist Dietmar Brixy. \nEven the title of the exhibition alludes to the location\, generating pleasant anticipation of the ripe and juicy fruits of summer which are now – in the spring of 2010 – only just buds or blossoms. Dietmar Brixy\, himself a passionate gardener with many citrus trees in his care\, was looking forward to this project like almost no other\, preparing it with great passion. He bought an annual pass to the gardens months in advance and found inspiration and ideas here which have now been realized in a large series of new paintings. In fact\, Brixy created more works than the halls of the orangery have room for\, allowing the Worms Kunstverein to exhibit his paintings in their more urban setting as well.
