SUMMARY:Paintings from the "Malaysia Cycle"
DESCRIPTION:Early works by Dietmar Brixy 1993/94\n  \nBrixy’s early imagery plumbs depths and origins. Symbolic in content and pictorial in art. Human being is at the centre of the painter’s interest. Essential are: the primal matter of “water”\, chance encounters\, twisted and trodden paths of life. The penetration into and emergence from deep soul worlds and a variable thicket of formal structures dominate the canvases. The power of this pictorial language is fed by the concentration on the essential. \n  \n \n  \nEmergence\, 1993\, oil on linen\, 180 x 120 cm\n  \n  \nDIETMAR BRIXY – Paintings from the “Malaysia Cycle\nby Christel Heybrock (from the catalogue of the same) \n  \nIt seems to be a fundamental human need to see mirrors in the things around us in which we can recognise something of ourselves. In archaic cultures it goes so far that man becomes tributary: to the sun\, to the animal gods\, to a sacred mountain or tree. This expresses the realisation that man is dependent on the earth and is shaped by its conditions\, not vice versa. \n  \nWhen looking at the pictures from Dietmar Brixy’s “Malaysia Cycle”\, one suddenly becomes aware of what occidental civilisation notoriously ignores\, namely those correspondences between man and nature that reach down into the depths. There is indeed the term “soul landscape”\, but isn’t its use already somewhat disreputable and doesn’t it denote the pictures of all too romantic\, world-escape painters who\, in their spunness\, only ever look inwards and flee from trials of preservation in reality? \n  \nDietmar Brixy’s pictures prove again and again how foolish this suspicion is and that the real tests of endurance lie precisely in the inner work – in processing what one has encountered. Happiness and disappointments\, loneliness and experiences of life and fullness want to be absorbed in equal measure and understood as an impetus for growth\, and so key motifs for such processes could already be found in Brixy’s work: for example\, the ladder as an image of progression\, but also of the connection between two sides\, or the snail shell as a sign of a place of protection and encapsulation that made new growth possible from within. \n  \nNow\, then\, the “Malaysia Cycle”\, born out of the experience of a landscape whose abundance and density are overwhelming. In its complexity and impenetrability\, the Southeast Asian jungle actually became the landscape of the soul\, whereby Brixy by no means meant only his own\, but was able to see the personal concern in a supra-personal\, generally human perspective. \n  \n \n  \nMysterious\, 1993\, oil on canvas\, 50 x 40 cm\n\n  \nThe pictures are not easy to receive\, especially not quickly.\n  \nThe jewel-like luminous surface with its sometimes almost painfully intense colours wants to be penetrated in order to be recognisable as the result of a growth process from the deepest to the uppermost layer of paint: the jungle and its laws of vegetation from the swampy ground to palm branches and luminous blossoms found a surprisingly appropriate correspondence in Brixy’s painting method of superimposed layers of paint. \n  \nEntering the “Malaysia cycle” means entering an outer and inner jungle. What seems to be given at first glance changes during the viewing\, as if one could take steps with the eyes. Almost all the paintings in the cycle seem closed at first\, often dominated by the predominance of a single colour on top. These are\, for example\, blue in the “Swimmer”\, yellow-green in the “Jungle Rush” or an aubergine tone mixed from red and white in the picture “Crouching”. Those who are content to recognise these colours and enjoy them see nothing. \n  \nOnly after a longer pause\, perhaps favoured by a change in the daylight\, does the eye work out structures and deeper layers that gradually emerge so intensely that they almost make the dominant surface colour disappear. The impression is then the opposite of the one at the beginning: the surface seems to be pushed into the background and the depth is in the foreground; the structures of form prove to be powerful and penetrating after having hardly appeared at first. Analogously\, what can the gaze grasp when one goes into the jungle on a boat\, as Brixy did? The gaze grasps clouds of green and only later\, near the arduous progress\, trunks\, aerial roots\, lianas\, leaf veins\, in other words the structures and the dark ground of evolved forms. \n  \n \nJungle Creatures\, 1993\, oil on nettle\, 60 x 80 cm\n  \nBrixy’s painting technique has often been described.\n  \nOn top of the primer of the canvas lies a usually very bright colour\, for example red. Except for remnants\, this layer is covered by other colours\, and often a complementary colour lies at the very top. Depending on the rhythmic needs of the painting\, Brixy now scratches the lower layers free again and draws fine\, feathery parallels into the surface with a comb\, giving it something light\, wafting\, breathing. Thus\, a signal-like red may emerge from beneath a fierce blue\, which proves to be weightless during viewing and is in any case the colour of depth and absorption\, or a picture that appears entirely in a light\, spring-like yellow-green becomes increasingly darker\, warmer and at the same time more threatening. \n  \nThe jungle as a landscape of the soul? Are these landscape views in the conventional sense that Brixy painted with the “Malaysia Cycle”? Of course not. What is meant is the outside as well as the inside. The painter only became increasingly aware of the inner fullness\, the threatening wild growth of fears and forces in the human soul\, when he saw the outer jungle. A painting like \,\,Tiefenrausch” reproduces the situation of diving. The real snorkel-diving already seems to take on an undreamed-of glamour when Brixy only reports on this experience\, which is new to him – unconsciously\, he seems to have discovered a primal action\, a process of almost ritual significance for himself with it. Diving below the surface\, the cautious exploration of hidden connections\, wasn’t that already part of his abilities before? \n  \n \nTiefenrausch\, 1993\, oil on linen\, 120 x 180 cm\n\n\n\nAnd now this picture. A blue you only know from dreams.\n  \nAt first sight\, one doubts that it can be endured for a long time\, because in an almost painful way it is increased by spots in red/orange. One should stay with these spots for a while and then scan the blue again. The red/orange\, those actually burdensome\, albeit vital colours in the depths\, is always accompanied by a lighter white\, sometimes in delicate streaks\, or a light green-yellow or darkness up to black. So many colours\, which were hardly recognisable at first\, begin to create a coherence\, a wave movement of water from flashing light reflections and darkness. \n  \nOr does this flickering and sloshing\, this aimless but ever more precisely recognisable change\, this constant exchange\, possibly take place in the depths of the water? At the bottom? Outside and inside\, depth and surface are one in Brixy’s work\, they are subject to a delicate exchange just like the crests of the waves that become the trough of a wave and glitter up again and back into the shadows? \n  \nSo in the middle of the blue there are structures. Two transparent serpentine lines form like umbilical cords in which a liquid pulsates. Or umbilical cords like the tentacles of underwater creatures? From a purely evolutionary point of view\, humans also originate from the water habitat\, which can still be inferred from their prenatal stage. It is not too much to say that Brixy\, diving\, painting\, sounding out depths and origins\, penetrates to the conditions of an existence not yet divided into body here and soul there. \n  \nAn infinitely cautiously suggested human figure can be elicited from the painting “Tiefenrausch” in the middle between the two umbilical cords that create an open\, mandala-like oval. Head and arms\, chest\, belly and legs are the result of thin flickering and gentle little shadows\, nothing else. \n  \n  \nWhat is this picture?\n  \nSelf-portrait of the snorkel diver Brixy? Certainly. The image of a complete integration of man into the water habitat? No doubt. Or is it the symbolic representation of a human being who\, in exploring the depths of his soul\, dives down to the id\, to the innermost part of his person\, to that washed-over and invisible continent that connects all human beings? \n  \nThe questions are wrong\, because there is no ‘or’ in Brixy\, there are only correspondences. The sloshing of the water is at the same time an exchange of meanings. The red that emerges from the depths\, the glitter and the darkness\, they not only give form and structure to an unstructured substance like water\, but also to the unstructured\, potentially chaotic element that man finds in his own depths. There\, something that cannot be named shines\, flashes and sinks just as it does on the surface of that element water that man carries in his history and in his body. \n  \nIn Malaysia\, in the midst of a foreign outside world\, Brixy has opened up a foreign inside world that is just as primeval and primeval as the forest. Even more: he has painted his discoveries. They are pictures of a travelling explorer. \n  \nChristel Heybrock \n  \nCLICK HERE FOR THE CATALOGUE “DIETMAR BRIXY – PICTURES FROM THE MALAYSIA CYCLE” \n  \n  \n—————————————— \nCurrent exhibition in Berlin shows early works by artist Dietmar Brixy \n  \nDIETMAR BRIXY | RETROSPECTIVE 1991 – 2021 | PAINTING \nTammen Gallery presents works by the Mannheim-based artist from the last 30 years. SUMMARY:Brixy Retrospective in Berlin
DESCRIPTION:DIETMAR BRIXY | Retrospective 1991 – 2021 | Painting\n  \nThe exhibition “Dietmar Brixy | Retrospective 1991 – 2021”\, taking place at the Tammen Gallery in Berlin\, presents works by the Mannheim-based artist from the last 30 years. The exhibition runs from 3 December 2021 to 19 February 2022. \n  \nA new catalogue “REFLECT” with texts by Dorothee Baer-Bogenschütz\, Dr Dietmar Schuth\, Prof. Dieter Ronte\, Dr Monica Jager-Schlichter and Werner Tammen is available to accompany the exhibition. Publisher: Galerie Tammen & Kunstverein Villa Streccius in Landau e.V. \n  \n \nReflect\, 2021\, oil on canvas\, 180 x 140 cm\n  \n  \nExtract from the new REFLECT catalogue\n  \n“Fantastical seedtime-markings\, a dense canopy of wonders\, odes to the Dionysian\, secret dabblings in the surreal\, playground of nature sprites—or even mood boards for Elvis Presley’s Jungle Room at Graceland? What exactly is it that Dietmar Brixy makes in his sun-drenched studio\, with its Gothic Revival architecture and views of verdant green bamboo groves\, fig trees\, camellias\, and rare rhododendron varieties like the Blue Pe – ter? Mysterious metaphors\, cryptic symbolism\, serpentine beauty? Nature—be it sublimely bountiful or frenetically wild\, tenderly sprouting or flagrantly expiring—seems to have an allegorical role in his art. And beyond the purely vegetal\, our eye also catches glimpses of cosmic phenomena. Brixy’s paintings lead us into far-off galaxies\, no matter which phase of his career or series of works they belong to. They manifest as an outlandish\, bewildering but enticing mixtum compositum. They bewitch\, beguile\, and bemuse the beholder. Why? Because\, in Victor Hugo’s words\, we are confronted with far horizons of dreaming and “the contemplators are probably contemplated.” (Quote: Victor Hugo “The Wretched”\, Munich 1999\, p. 75)” \n  \nDorothee Baer-Bogenschütz in the exhibition catalogue REFLECT from page 45 onwards \n  \n  \n– CLICK HERE FOR THE DIGITAL VERSION OF THE CATALOGUE – \n  \n \nBrixy\, Horizon\, 2018\, oil on canvas\, 120 x 240 cm\n  \n  \n  \nCreative phases and working cycles of the artist Dietmar Brixy\n  \nBrixy works for the most part in working cycles\, after which he titles his paintings. Thus\, his works rarely have individual titles\, but are named after the respective series of works. Some series are not completed and new works are added again and again. The individual cycles thus build on each other chronologically\, but also influence each other anew. \n  \nFrom the very beginning\, the line forms a central motif in Brixy’s early works. As a lifeline\, branching branches or even as a horizon. The essence of the line can be interpreted quite differently depending on the group of works: as the meeting of two individuals whose paths cross\, as it were also as an image for setting out – setting out on the path – or as the crossing of boundaries. \n \nohne Titel\, 1991\, oil on canvas\, 180 x 240 cm\n  \n  \nThese motifs are particularly strong in the avenues from the BEYOND series of works or in the perspective landscapes in HORIZON. The numerous nature motifs in his paintings have an even stronger recognition value. Intertwined branches dominate the scenes in WEINLESE\, ROOTS\, GROW\, EDEN\, DISCOVER\, SURPRISE\, TOMORROW\, ROOM or even HAPPY. The play of light and colour creates deep\, perspective levels. Luminous areas of colour form contrasts with sculpturally modelled formations. \n  \n“Brixy assumes that a work of art is a cosmos that can develop a richness within itself. But not for the artist\, but for the viewer. They are works of art that are directed towards the viewer.” \n  \nProf. Dr. Dieter Ronte Former Director Museum of Modern Art Vienna\, Sprengel Museum Hannover and Kunstmuseum Bonn \n  \n \nAllee\, 2008\, oil on canvas\, 240 x 180 cm\n  \n  \nAbout the artist Dietmar Brixy\n  \n“Born in 1961 in simple circumstances in Mannheim\, Brixy developed immense creative compensatory energies from the anachronistic longing for a mythical place in the midst of the tangible beauty of nature\, which he created according to his inner image. Over the past two decades\, a successful artist’s biography has been formed through self-responsible action. Ten years after his studies at the Karlsruhe Art Academy\, Brixy realised a childhood dream in the immediate vicinity of his origins. In 2001\, he acquired the Old Pumping Station Neckarau\, which had been deprived of its function\, carefully converted the imposing neo-Gothic industrial monument into an original art and living space over a period of two years and designed an enchanting garden landscape as a constant source of inspiration and balance. Surrounded by camellias\, bamboo and magnolias\, the breathtaking\, almost unchanged machine hall of the pumping station has since been the setting for the large-format\, strongly coloured painting expressions that have become Brixy’s trademark. \n  \n  \nThis island of the blessed\, shielded from everyday life and yet porous to the world\, is both the starting point and the destination of an impressively powerful self-design\, the resonance chamber of a self-confident claim to validity. This is where the artist returns again and again from his work trips to exotic countries. Here he regularly invites a changing public to exhibitions of his paintings\, which inevitably take on an installation character in the industrial-historical ambience\, which is what really brings out the eventfulness of the painting. The place determines the painting. Painting animates the place. Pathos and energy characterise both.” \n  \nDr Ulrike Lorenz former Director of the Mannheim Kunsthalle\, today President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar \n  \n  \n \nBlaue Schneckenengel\, 1998\, oil on canvas\, 180 x 240 cm

SUMMARY:REFLECT - EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:Mannheim artist Dietmar Brixy is opening the doors of the “Altes Pumpwerk” in Mannheim-Neckarau again this year for his exhibition “REFLECT”. From 24 September to 17 October\, he invites art lovers to a tour of his artist’s residence and presents compositions from his new series “REFLECT” as well as selected works from earlier phases in the interior and exterior spaces of the industrial monument. In cooperation with the Galerie Tammen from Berlin\, the exhibition is complemented by sculptures by guest artist  Sonja Edle von Hoeßle. The spacious presentation areas offer visitors the opportunity to keep the proper minimum distance. \n  \nThe current series is entitled REFLECT\n  \nDietmar Brixy’s new series of works bears the meaningful name REFLECT. In English as in German\, this means “radiate”\, “reflect” and implies not only the purely optical\, physical process but also a reflection of thoughts and feelings. At first\, however\, the radiance of the colours that make Brixy’s pictures shine so incomparably dominates. Red in particular dominates the scenery\, as a natural signal colour that embodies sensuality and joie de vivre like no other. Now\, in 2021\, the red may also signal a new energy and a regained optimism. \n  \nMore defensive colours such as blue\, grey and delicate pastel shades take a back seat\, almost shyly\, and noticeably cool the temperature of the whole picture. They play silently and quietly in the space that opens up behind the always somewhat loud red. Like a theatre curtain\, the red sets the stage for an almost illusionistic deep space\, as we have known it in painting since the Renaissance. Other elements and effects of classical painting can also be discerned\, central and aerial perspective suggesting distant landscapes. Of course\, Brixy does not paint one\, but our imagination recognises natural horizons\, mountain ranges or shorelines behind his horizontal pictorial elements. \n  \nWhile the red is generally applied very strongly and impasto\, standing at the ramp like an opera diva in velvet and heavy damask\, the passages behind appear in a gossamer robe of silk; here the oil paint has been spread with a palette knife to form delicate colour gradients. Here again our imagination sees a natural phenomenon\, reflections in the water\, as we have known them in painting since the Impressionists. The Venice paintings by Claude Monet\, for example\, are famous\, where the façades of the palaces are reflected as a play of colours in the Grand Canal. But in Brixy’s work it is not real things\, it is the artist’s own colours that are reflected immanently\, in the picture itself\, and thus quite literally redeem the title of the new series. \n  \n \nReflect\, 2021\, oil on canvas\, 180 x 140 cm\n  \n  \nExhibition in Mannheim shows works by Sonja Edle von Hoeßle\n  \nComplementing his own painterly compositions\, Dietmar Brixy\, in cooperation with the Tammen Gallery from Berlin\, presents sculptures by the sculptor Sonja Edle von Hoeßle in the interior and exterior spaces of his artist residence. Her “endless loops” of Corten steel\, some of which are large in size\, are welded together without beginning or end points and conquer the space with expansive gestures. Static and movement as well as openness and closure characterise her work\, which finds its characteristic formulations in the alternation of straight and curved sections. Sonja Edle von Hoeßle combines moments of tension and relaxation\, of calm and powerful dynamics. Her sculptures stand as synonyms for the eternal cycle of life and all natural processes. It is precisely here that the points of contact with Dietmar Brixy’s paintings reveal themselves. In their compositions\, both artists play with the sharpened perception of the viewer and always stage new\, surprising perspectives. They open up unexpected views and vistas\, enable a new perception of the surrounding world and formulate the unmistakable request – “REFLECT”! \n  \n \nGoldedition Loop 34 \, 2015\, 30 x 52 x 31 cm\n  \nWhat: \nExhibition „REFLECT“ from artist Dietmar Brixy. \nSpecial Guest Galerie Tammen\, Berlin with Sonja Edle von Hoeßle – Sculptures. \n  \nWhere: \nAltes Pumpwerk Mannheim-Neckarau\, Aufeldstraße 19\, 68199 Mannheim \n  \nWhen: \n24. SUMMARY:Art on a building
DESCRIPTION:Fire. Water. Earth. Air. | Art on a building\n  \nAn art installation by the artist Dietmar Brixy in the New Main Fire Station of the City of Mannheim. Twelve tondi made especially for the entrance hall of the new main fire station in Mannheim\, each bearing an Olympic god’s name\, bubble up a wall and symbolise the origin of all being. \n  \n  \nOnce the fire brigade was solely committed to fire protection\, today it has many other tasks that can be summarised under the term disaster control. Not only fire\, but also water\, earth and air can unleash themselves as forces of nature and threaten people. These four elements are the theme of the large series of paintings that the Mannheim painter Dietmar Brixy has created especially for the entrance hall of the new fire station. In doing so\, the artist reflects on the doctrine of the four elements\, which was conceived by the ancient Greeks as a kind of natural philosophy. The philosopher Empedocles saw in the four elements the fundamental manifestations of matter and assigned them to individual gods\, such as fire to Zeus\, the father of the gods\, and air to his wife Hera. \n  \n  \nDietmar Brixy has selected twelve gods and assigned them to his circular paintings.\n  \nThese now float like planets in the firmament and represent the Olympic heaven of the gods. Some of the Greek gods were explicitly responsible for special forces of nature\, such as Poseidon for water and Demeter for the earth. Thus\, people once believed that when there were fires\, floods\, earthquakes or storms\, they had incurred the wrath of these special gods. Fortunately\, modern firefighters no longer believe in such animistic nature religions. \n  \n  \nThe series was created from 2006 onwards and is a reminder of the great snow load of this winter\n  \nHephaistos\, the god of the forge\, was also assigned to fire\, while his wife Aphrodite\, the goddess of love\, was responsible for love fires at best\, especially when she stirred up her husband’s anger through her love for the war god Ares. The goddess Hestia was responsible for the peaceful hearth fire at home. House fires are still one of the most important reasons for calling the fire brigade\, but also forest fires (Artemis) or damage caused by war (Ares\, Athena) and even major traffic accidents (Hermes). In the midst of all this hovers Apollo\, the god of light\, who protects people from harm and reconciles them with art. \n  \nDr. Dietmar Schuth M.A. \nMuseum for the Colour Blue\, Schwetzingen \n  \n  \n  \nThanks to the support of the donors listed here\, the installation was officially handed over to the city of Mannheim in 2021.\n  \n \n  \n  \n \n  \nf.l.t.r. SUMMARY:Museum Blue
DESCRIPTION:Museum Blue: Artist Dietmar Brixy donates money\n  \nSchwetzinger Tageszeitung\, 12.6.2021\, Text by Lukas Heylmann\, Link to the text of the Schwetzinger Tageszeitung \n  \nDietmar Schuth and Dietmar Brixy have a lot in common\, not only their first names and year of birth. The two have known each other for a long time and have also cooperated for many years. Their greatest commonality\, however\, is without doubt that they have both dedicated their lives to art. So it is no surprise that Dietmar Brixy decided to make a monetary donation of 1500 euros to the Museum Blau\, which his friend runs and founded in Schwetzingen. “Commitment is very important to me\,” the artist explains. “For example\, I have already donated to the Diakonissen Hospital in Mannheim. But there are limits somewhere and that’s why I like to orientate myself in the region.” \n  \nAlthough his art takes him to other parts of the world\, the artist still lives and works in his native city of Mannheim. Schwetzingen is of course only a stone’s throw away. A few years ago\, the Schwetzingen Art Association organised an exhibition entitled “Animal Art” in the Orangery of the castle. A Brixy painting was also part of it. “Actually\, he only marginally fitted in there with his abstract style\,” amuses Schuth. “But the hippo painting that we then exhibited was more realistic. It’s unusual for him\, but it fit very well into the exhibition.” And here we find another bridge: for the hippo in question now hangs in the Museum Blau. The two friends are somewhat at odds about exactly how it all went down\, “but then we are already over 60\,” says Brixy with a laugh. \n  \n \nArtist Dietmar Brixy and Museum Director Dr. Dietmar Schuth\n  \nLonger opening hours possible\n  \nHis donation now serves a concrete purpose at the museum: extending the opening hours. Until now\, the Museum Blau could open its doors to the public on Saturdays\, Sundays and public holidays from 2 to 6 pm. From now on\, it will go four hours earlier on Sundays. “I hire pupils and students\, especially here from Schwetzingen\, as temporary help and I want to be able to pay them\,” explains Schuth. Thanks to the donation\, this is now possible for the time being\, but of course sponsors are always being sought. Then further extensions would be possible. Because extended opening hours\, especially on Sundays\, offer families with children in particular the opportunity to visit the Museum Blau. “The museum is definitely child-friendly and there are amusements where children can have fun and learn something at the same time\,” explains the museum founder. It is all the better that the relaxed Corona rules now allow guided tours in the museum again. Although the space in the rooms is limited\, Dietmar Schuth is nevertheless always in the process of rearranging the exhibition. Dietmar Brixy and his husband David Richardson also agree that a single visit is hardly enough to take in everything. \n  \nIn general\, the two are personally very fond of the museum\, which is always apparent when they are on site. Richardson repeatedly points out parts of the art on display\, especially pieces that Schuth himself created. “We like Dietmar’s commitment. It’s tangible and not just theory. You have to appreciate that and that’s why we like to advertise it\,” Brixy adds. The fact that a monetary donation is welcome right now is of course also related to the pandemic. “We had losses due to Corona\, that has to be said clearly. Culture was not treated particularly well during this time and that certainly annoyed us all\,” criticises Dietmar Schuth. \n  \nHe doesn’t necessarily mean the city: “Schwetzingen has a lot of culture that is done through associations. But the city has helped the freelancers\, I think that’s very decent.” \n  \n  \nFigs for the kitchen\n  \nOn the occasion of his visit to the museum\, Brixy also brought his namesake two paintings\, one of which he can choose for the Museum Blau. The choice fell on a fig motif\, which from now on will be exhibited in the kitchen room of the museum\, which is all about blue food. Previously\, Brixy had left plants: “It doesn’t always have to be something big.” If it is possible\, the collaboration should continue\, they agree.

SUMMARY:Christian Marx Gallery - Düsseldorf
DESCRIPTION:Located in Düsseldorf’s stilwerk\, Christian Marx Gallery has been representing international art in the fields of painting\, sculpture\, drawing\, graphics and photography since 2009. Gallery owner Christian Marx presents his select group of artists at numerous solo and group exhibitions as well as at international art fairs. One of the gallery owner’s focuses is on promoting young graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Many of the artists are master students of renowned professors such as Markus Lüpertz\, Jörg Immendorff\, Günther Uecker\, Jannis Kounellis\, Thomas Ruff\, Tal R. or Peter Doig. The Christian Marx Galerie is a member of the Federal Association of German Galleries and Editions. \n  \n \nGallery owner Christian Marx\n  \n  \nThis is what gallery owner Christian Marx says about artist Brixy\n  \nColour\, power\, structure\, form\, sculpture\, painting\, nature\, aesthetics and a good dose of gut feeling.\n  \nIn a nutshell:\nIt’s my wife’s fault! It was she who\, during our visit to the art.fair in Cologne\, stood fascinated in front of a wall installation of Brixy’s bubbles and raved about the wonderful aesthetics and colourfulness of the objects. \n  \nFrankly speaking:\nYes\, I liked the installation too\, but as a representative of artists who devote themselves exclusively to figurative painting\, at that moment when Dietmar Brixy thrust a catalogue into my hand and said we could keep it\, I didn’t even think about gallery representation. And yet\, a small flame was lit. Gut feeling. \n  \nHonestly:\nThe gallery owner Dietmar gave the book to was still in his infancy and had not participated in a single fair as an exhibitor himself\, let alone been anything like an enrichment to the Brixy cosmos. And what does Dietmar Brixy do? He continues to invite me to his exhibitions and fairs\, sends me his publications and keeps in touch. For this I thank you\, dear Dietmar\, the gallery owner could mature like the wine in the cellar of the pumping station. \n  \nIn other words:\nOne day I couldn’t resist the fascination of Brixy any longer\, picked up the phone and we made an appointment at Pumpwerk. In principle\, I could stop at this point\, because anyone who has had the pleasure of visiting this special place knows exactly what happens now. It is nothing less than the discovery of a planet whose gravitational pull goes far beyond what is known. More object than flat painting\, the works know how to unfold their effect in space. Brixy’s original artistic activity as a sculptor cannot be overlooked. Like a relief\, the painter/sculptor creates an impressive depth on the two-dimensionality of the canvas. By means of superimpositions\, horizons are created\, shapes and structures provide support and the power of the colour allows the viewer to dive into the deepest interior. \n  \nClearly said:\nDietmar Brixy has developed an unmistakable style whose intensity forces the vast majority of recipients to either reject it completely or be totally enthusiastic. Or perhaps not after all? Once you have opened yourself to Brixy’s fascination\, you will no longer be able to escape its spell. From my many years of representation\, I can tell you of collectors who initially signalled little enthusiasm for Brixy’s work\, only to come into the gallery one day and suddenly be surprised with the sentence “I’ll buy this one”. Although Dietmar Brixy’s signature is unmistakable\, he manages to maintain an enormous development\, change and creativity in his cosmos\, so that quite often completely new perspectives on his work open up. This much is certain; only very few artists are granted this. \n  \nLast said:\nEach entry into the cosmos of the artist Dietmar Brixy manages to touch the inner self. Always personal and in very different ways\, it is human nature to react completely divergently to Dietmar’s work. Where one person perceives the aestheticisation as a blockade\, for the other it means having found a bridge to penetrate further. This could be continued indefinitely. It can only be explained by the structure of the respective observer\, but the gift of Dietmar Brixy and his art is to elicit these emotions and emotions. It is like the mirror in the mirror\, always a next step\, always a new level\, always the next horizon. \nDiscover\, Surprise\, Horizon………..Happy!!!!!!!! \n\n  \n \nExhibition view Christian Marx Gallery\n  \nBRIXY & CHRISTIAN MARX GALLERY\nExhibitions extract: \n\nart KARLSRUHE selection @ Christian Marx Galerie\, Düsseldorf (GS)\, 2021\nChristian Marx Galerie\, Düsseldorf\, „Happy Discover(y)“ (OAS virtuell)\, 2020\nart KARLSRUHE with Christian Marx Galerie\, Düsseldorf (GS)\, 2019\nChristian Marx Galerie\, Düsseldorf „Brixy – Horizon“ (OAS)\, 2018\nart KARLSRUHE with Christian Marx Galerie\, Düsseldorf (GS)\, 2017\nChristian Marx Galerie\, Düsseldorf\, „Grand Opening“ in „stilwerk“ (GS)\, 2016\nChristian Marx Galerie\, Düsseldorf\, „Discover. SUMMARY:Nature and Art
DESCRIPTION:Dietmar Brixy blooms in many gardens\n  \nTen years ago a very special flower saw the light of day. \nIts name: Dietmar Brixy. \n  \nThe flower is a special cultivar of the genus “Iris”\, which the artist chose himself ten years ago as a birthday present. The flower reflects his own colour world in the most amazing way. It is as colourful and vivid as his paintings themselves. \n  \nIn his art\, Brixy challenges the viewer to look closely. He opens the view to details and thus creates the fascination of discovery. In art\, it is often the small inconspicuous elements that make the difference. In nature it is no different. The impressive big whole is created by a complicated interplay of colours and shapes. In the same way\, art and nature influence each other\, intertwine and let their complex magic work on us. In this way they manage to delight us again and again with their fascinating details. \n  \n  \nArt and nature influence each other\nThe fact that nature is a constant source of inspiration for Brixy is obvious even at a fleeting glance at his pictures. Blossoms\, leaves and organic structures sometimes adorn the scene in gentle ornamentation\, sometimes they dominate a section of the picture. Nature is omnipresent in his art and finds its way into his opulent world of colours and forms in manifold abstractions. \n  \nThis is why Brixy has created such a world around him – in his own lovingly designed garden at the Altes Pumpwerk in Mannheim-Neckarau. The gardening work is almost as important to him as the art itself. In harmony with himself\, nature and his art\, he always finds new inspiration and creativity for his powerful works. \n  \n»I want the viewer to feel the effect that the garden right on my doorstep has on me. I want the viewer to recognize the presence of great things in little things. That my art seeks to capture the wonders of nature by looking\, for example\, at a single blossom.«\n  \nThis enthusiasm can be felt not only when looking at his paintings\, but also in every sentence he says about nature and his garden. This deep connection with the plant world and the simultaneous reverence for it also inspired Brixy’s partner David Richardson to make a very special gift: a special iris strain called Dietmar Brixy. \n  \n  \n  \nA gift was the trigger for the breeding\nIt was a very special gift for the artist’s 50th birthday\, he claimes\, the most beautiful one he had ever received. Together with his partner he went to France to visit the iris breeder Cayeux. Since the 19th century\, the name has been synonymous with several generations of traditional breeding and has repeatedly produced award-winning novelties. \n  \nWhen Dietmar Brixy and David Richardson arrived\, the time had come once again. A total of seven new iris species were waiting to find a name giver. And Brixy had the great honour of choosing one of the flowers\, which from now on will be known as “Dietmar Brixy”. They went out into the field with the filigree plants and inspected the magnificent iris flowers. A difficult decision awaited the artist\, which flower was it to be? Suddenly the eye fell on a very special specimen – white cathedral leaves towered high\, enthroned above a bed of violet hanging leaves with bronze-coloured lines. The colouring was so virtuos that one immediately thought of a picture composition by Brixy – the choice was made. \n  \n  \nThe iris adorns numerous gardens\nSince then\, the “Dietmar Brixy”-Iris has been decorating not only his own garden\, but also numerous gardens of grateful customers. For several years now\, Brixy has been giving away rhizomes of his iris to plant fans who enthusiastically raise them in their gardens. So it happens that every year numerous photos reach the artist showing flowering “Dietmar Brixy” irises. \n  \nThis year again\, countless pictures have arrived. Especially in such difficult times of social distance and initial restrictions Brixy is happy about every single flower. The irises have been planted in the past years and now in bloom they give people a smile. Brixy is thrilled by so much feedback that he regularly receives and that he was able to make people happy with such a small yet valuable gift! \n  \nHere you can see a selection of various photo impressions of the flowering “Dietmar Brixy” irises from recent years\, submitted by numerous plant fans.

SUMMARY:Barbara von Stechow Gallery - Frankfurt am Main
DESCRIPTION:Located in Frankfurt’s Westend\, Galerie Barbara von Stechow is a gallery for contemporary art. The promotion of contemporary talent\, both young and established\, from German-speaking countries as well as an intensive engagement with the work of renowned American artists form the focal points of the gallery’s programme. Through regular participation in various art fairs in Germany and abroad\, the Barbara von Stechow Gallery has an international clientele and a wide range of contacts in the widespread international art scene. \n  \n  \nGallery history\n  \nFounded back in 1995\, the Barbara von Stechow Gallery is located in Frankfurt’s beautiful Westend district. The owner and gallery owner Barbara von Stechow grew up in New York and first studied business administration at the European Business School\, as well as art history and history at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. Before Barbara von Stechow turned to her work as an independent gallery owner\, she was the successful managing director of the Galerie am Schweizer Platz. A short time later\, inspired by her father’s collecting activities\, she founded the Barbara von Stechow Gallery in Frankfurt’s Feldbergstraße. Since then\, the owner and gallery owner has been presenting and promoting internationally established artists as well as up-and-coming talents from the local art scene. Through changing exhibitions of various painting and sculpture positions in the generous gallery spaces\, as well as at various art fairs in Germany and abroad\, such as in Karlsruhe\, Zurich and Miami\, the gallery makes statements in terms of representational and abstract contemporary art. \n\n  \n  \nAbout the gallery owner Barbara von Stechow\n  \nBarbara von Stechow’s passion is to bring people together\, to inspire them with contemporary painting\, sculpture and photography and to introduce them to the subject of art. The mother of four sons and partner of the operator of the Hattenheim Kronenschlößchen\, Hans Burkhardt Ullrich\, has been a member of the board of the State Association of Galleries in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate since 2002 and President of the Union International Club since 2014. \n  \n\n \nGallery owner Barbara von Stechow\n\n  \nVision of the gallery\n  \nWith the opening of her gallery\, Barbara von Stechow pursued the goal of promoting both young and established contemporary talents from German-speaking countries\, in addition to already renowned American artists. In doing so\, the Frankfurt-based gallery owner always focuses on graduates of the surrounding art academies\, such as the Städelschule and the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach. The focal points of the monthly changing gallery programme are the exclusive representation of renowned American artists in the European region\, such as Joe Stefanelli and Hunt Slonem\, in combination with emerging artists from Germany\, such as Dietmar Brixy. \n\n  \n  \nThis is what gallery owner Barbara von Stechow says about Brixy\n  \nBorn in Mannheim in 1961\, Dietmar Brixy studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe from 1985 to 1991. As an established and recognised artist\, he has long been an integral part of the national and international art scene and can be seen at fairs and in galleries all over the world. \n  \nIt is the inexhaustible spectrum of colours that the artist brings to bear in his works and thus always creates new impressions and associations. Using the so-called drip method\, the paint is sprayed or dribbled onto the canvas on an initially black primed picture surface. Brixy takes the symbioses of colour and form produced by chance as the starting point for the visualisation of his increasingly clear ideas. \n  \nLayer by layer and always in direct contact with his work\, he applies the paint paste-like with his hands\, brush or palette knife and thus slowly creates a connection between the already created pictorial elements. Not infrequently\, organic and even floral forms can be discerned. He creates these\, among other things\, by imprinting leaves and blossoms\, thus setting a clear accent to his otherwise very dynamic and flowing way of working. The structures\, which are not only strongly emphasised in colour\, but also the sculpturally and haptically striking motifs\, thus speak to the viewer through the medium of the picture. The expressive colour language of the paintings emphasises the softly flowing lines in detail and unintentionally allows them to become the compositional structure of the picture. \n  \n \n  \nArtist Dietmar Brixy and gallery owner Barbara von Stechow\n  \nBRIXY & THE GALLERY BARBARA VON STECHOW\nExhibitions:\n\nArt Miami\, USA with Barbara von Stechow Gallery\, Frankfurt (GS)\, 2021 (planned)\nBarbara von Stechow Gallery\, Frankfurt am Main\, „Splashing Colours“ (OAS)\, 2020\nDiscovery Art Fair Frankfurt with Barbara von Stechow Gallery\, Frankfurt (GS)\, 2019\n\nHere you get an overview of all exhibition activities of Brixy since 2009\n  \n  \nSee the Gallery Tour of the exhibition “Splashing Colours” here.\n

SUMMARY:LANDSCAPE I
DESCRIPTION:LANDSCAPE I – this is the title of the first annual exhibition 2021 of the Tammen Gallery. The group exhibition will present a wide variety of positions from the fields of painting\, drawing\, photography and sculpture. A catalog and a film will be published for this first exhibition supported by the federal funding program KULTUR NEUSTARTEN of the Ministry of Culture and the KUNSTFONDS foundation. \nOn the occasion of the exhibition LANDSCHAFT I a catalog will be published. This catalog as well as a video of the complete exhibition can be viewed online on the website of Tammen Gallery from February 7. \nThe participating artists in the exhibition are: \nCHRISTIAN BARHO – HOLGER BIERMANN – DIETMAR BRIXY – MORITZ GÖTZE – SAM GRIGORIAN – HEIKE JESCHONNEK – JINY LAN – VOLKER LEYENDECKER – ELLEN MÄDER-GUTZ – SABINE OSTERMANN – ANDREAS THEURER – UWE WOHLMACHER \n  \n  \nWhat does the artist Brixy present?\n  \nAt the exhibition LANDSCAPE I the artist Brixy will be present with his round paintings\, the so-called Bamboo Bubbles. A late onset of winter in March 2006 leads to the variation of the bamboo theme. The otherwise steeply rising shoots of the plants bend under the heavy snow load in a semicircle to the ground. The painter reflects this twice: in the painted circular forms as well as in the format of the round picture\, the tondo. \nBrixy’s “Bamboo Bubbles”\, a multifaceted cosmos in which everything revolves around growth energy and flexibility\, is created. \n  \n \nGallery owner Werner Tammen in front of Bamboo Bubbles Installation\nBamboo Bubbles\, 2020\, oil on canvas\, diverse formats\n\n\n  \nThis is what the art historian Dr. Dorothée Bauerle-Willert says about the circular paintings of the artist Brixy\n  \nUnconventional and free\, Dietmar Brixy’s iridescent tondos take up the growth energies of nature\, its rondo; in a spiral movement from one to the other\, the art forms of nature are transferred into nature forms of art. The circular paintings thus reflect and play out the “dialectic of nature and counter-nature\,” of figuration and abstraction. The elastic lines of color intertwine\, intertwine\, form – almost as if by themselves – inward growths\, open vistas. View of nature is transformed into an artificial structure\, but in such a way that the process transformation\, which includes before and after\, remains vivid. The principle of sequence\, grouping\, and repetition employed in the Bamboo Bubbles series refers on the one hand to natural growth processes\, but on the other hand – and almost in paradox – incorporates formal strategies of serial art. \n  \n(Source: Catalog for the exhibition LANDSCHAFT I of the Tammen Gallery\, 2021) \n  \nExhibition title: LANDSCAPE I \nForm: Group exhibition \nDate: 07.02. – 05.04.2021 \nAppointments: info@galerie-tammen.de | Tel.: +49 (0)175 206 1942 | Doodle-Link  \n  \nHERE YOU CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT THE GALLERY TAMMEN – GALLERY PORTRAIT

SUMMARY:Tammen Gallery\, Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Tammen Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in Berlin. The gallery represents and presents renowned artists in an extensive exhibition program in the fields of painting\, sculpture & photography. It is present at international and national exhibition venues. As a gallery it is active in the professional associations BVDG (Federal Association of German Galleries) and LVBG (Berlin Galleries Association). The gallery owner Werner Tammen is chairman of the Landesverband Berliner Galerien and member of the advisory board of the art fair art KARLSRUHE. \n  \n  \nHistory of the Tammen Gallery\n  \nGallery Tammen exists for more than 40 years. The gallery was founded in 1979 as Galerie am Chamissoplatz. It acquired cult status for its primary profile as a gallery for satirical media\, comics\, caricature and cartoon in the 80s. After reunification in 1990\, it expanded into the Tammen & Busch Gallery in the Kreuzberg neighborhood on Fidicinstrasse. In 2006\, a move to larger premises took place in the immediate vicinity of Checkpoint-Charlie. In 2010\, the gallery moved to ideal premises on the corner of Friedrichstraße and Hedemannstraße. This is still located in Berlin-Kreuzberg\, not far from Checkpoint-Charlie. \n  \n \nGallery owner Werner Tammen\n\n\n  \n  \nThis is what gallery owner Werner Tammen says about Brixy\n  \nWerner Tammen tells about the works and the long lasting cooperation of the gallery Tammen and the artist Dietmar Brixy \n  \nThe artist Dietmar Brixy I know and represent for many years. Addressed by him at the time\, I visited him\, in Mannheim in his extraordinary refuge “Altes Pumpwerk Mannheim-Neckarau“. A very special place of which in the meantime\, I believe\, thousands are also fascinated\, if you visit it on the occasion of annual exhibitions. It is a refuge with designed nature – outside\, quasi a natural garden\, and a culturally sensitive redeveloped industrial monument – inside. \nIt has been built up over the last 20 years by him and his life partner David Richardson and successively made known to the public. The place itself is an industrial monument. Many are fascinated by the works of the artist Dietmar Brixy. Among them is the former director of the Kunsthalle Mannheim and current president of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar\, Dr. Ulrike Lorenz. She made it clear in a text for a large catalog by Brixy: “Place determines painting\, painting animates place.” That sums it up very well. \n  \nFrom an insider tip to a must-attend event every year\n  \nBrixy and his staff have always understood\, also through large annual actions in late summer\, to make the house public and to give guest artists of the gallery Tammen\, mainly sculptors\, the chance to present themselves there together with him\, to a large and broad audience. This makes the place interesting again in a very special way. A development from an insider tip\, to a compulsory date in the year. A large number of guest artists on our part were already in the old pumping station. Be it the now increasingly well-known paper artist Marion Eichmann\, the artists Lothar Seruset and Andreas Theurer\, or recently this year\, the very interesting young artist Matthias Garff. With his very contemporary works\, he hits the nerve and creates quite a furor on the art market. \n  \nBrixy represented at international trade fairs\n  \nOur gallery has represented Brixy not only nationally but also internationally due to very good and loyal arrangements. We were at major fairs in Istanbul\, Budapest\, Miami and New York. And always important\, also the presence at the German art fair Art Karlsruhe\, where we have always presented him very predestined. Thus\, we have altogether also made clear how much we appreciate his painting! Personally\, I have always been fascinated by the fact that it is quite recognizable that he comes from sculpture. \nHe originally studied sculpture and later switched to painting. But I think you can see the sculptural signature in his work (he would also never deny it). Works that are very impasto applied oil paintings that always explore the theme of nature in a very intense way. He is inspired by foreign travel. Not only to our fair appearances. It also drives him to the Caribbean or on major international trips and always fascinated by these impressions he returns to his refuge\, closes the doors and deals exclusively in the form of his painting with the experienced and seen. \n  \n \n  \nGallery owner Werner Tammen and artist Dietmar Brixy\n\n  \n\nNew exhibition 2021 on the theme “Landscape”\n  \nWe are pleased that we can present Brixy after a busy and exciting Corona year\, right at the beginning of the year in the large exhibition on the theme of “Landscape” also here with us in the gallery. A topic\, which is of course also influenced by the Corona situation certainly and will increase. The view of it\, the perhaps new view of romance in the classical sense\, but also with completely new visual languages\, which we try to bring together here in an exhibition. \nBrixy will be present in the exhibition with his tondos. Round pictures he makes since 2006 and which is very strongly influenced by nature\, respectively by the representation and natural behavior of bamboo. Bamboo that sways under the weight of snow and takes on completely new forms. His garden is full of bamboo he has planted himself. It is therefore a direct vision that surrounds him every day. This has very much motivated and influenced him to create these circular paintings and appears again and again in his works. We are pleased that we can show here his works from the large two-meter formats to the small sensitive formats. Further appearances are then among other things already at the art fair art Karlsruhe\, which was postponed to Whitsun\, where we will also show him again in a beautiful duet with the sculptor Matthias Garff. \n  \nWe are looking forward to this further engagement with an artist who is increasingly coming into the public spotlight and is also increasingly being noticed internationally! \n  \n  \nBRIXY AND THE TAMMEN GALLERY\n  \nExhibitions Examples:\n\nPositions Berlin Art Fair with Galerie Tammen\, Berlin (GS)\, 2020\nart KARLSRUHE with Galerie Tammen & Partner\, Berlin (one artist show)\, 2019\nPositions Berlin Art Fair with Galerie Tammen & Partner\, Berlin\, 2018\nGalerie Tammen & Partner\, Berlin\, „Brixy Surprise & Tomorrow“ (one artist show)\, 2017\nCONTEXT New York. Rooms can be transformed with the thoughtful presence of well-curated visual art to make them both powerful and timeless. \n  \n  \nWhat gallery owner Mary Ann Cohen says about Brixy\n  \nDietmar Brixy layers thick\, dreamy compositions\, otherwise swirling strong lines to pieces that have a certain lightness and strength at the same time. In modern\, contemporary homes with open floor plans\, art really must be an aesthetic centrepiece\, and Brixy adds a breathtaking touch to the home of a South Florida art collector. \n \n  \nDiscover\, 2014\, Öl auf Nessel\, 180 x 60 cm\n  \nThe German artist forms large grooves of colour\, layered in modern and elegant compositions. With his fingers he creates swirling\, precise clouds that flow across the canvas. This is not simply finger painting\, Brixy’s movements require precision and an exact technique. \n  \n \nDiscover\, 2013\, Öl auf Nessel\, 160 x 50 cm\n  \nBrixy’s ability to execute these precise methods by seamlessly inserting many primary and disparate shades of colour without mixing them into a continuous stroke is deceptive of his technical training as a sculptor. He effortlessly combines the subdued minimalist nuances of the desert with loud reds and cheerful yellows\, starry pink with sea-like turquoise. Black figures heavily and effortlessly in his compositions. There are tree-like earthly scenes\, but also otherworldly\, geometric scenes that invite you to dream. \n  \n \nSurprise\, 2015\, Öl auf Nessel\, 180 x 80 cm\n  \nBRIXY & MAC Art Galleries\n  \nSince 2015 the artist Dietmar Brixy is represented by MAC Art Galleries in the USA. \n  \nExhibitions:\n\nMac Fine Art\, Fort Lauderdale\, Brixy by “XXL Abstracts” (GS)\nMiami Art Week – Red Dot Miami with Mac Fine Art\, Fort Lauderdale\, USA (GS)\nMAC Fort Lauderdale\, MASS District Art Walk\, Fort Lauderdale\, USA (GS)\nMAC Jupiter Gallery\, “Other Worlds. SUMMARY:JAM SESSION Part II
DESCRIPTION:Like a “JAM SESSION” in music\, the year 2020 also requires a good deal of improvisation. Whether private\, business or political – all participants and positions in our society must constantly adapt to the changing conditions. But these challenges can be not only difficulties but also opportunities. An opportunity for renewal and development. Just like the outstanding artists of contemporary history\, who perceived their epoch with their works\, predicted revolutionary developments\, showed new paths or reminded us of past paths in order to be able to learn from them for the future. \n  \nExhibition title: JAM SESSION Part II \nForm: Group exhibition \nDate: 22.11. – 13.12.2020 \n  \nIn view of the measures taken to contain the corona pandemic\, the opening and closing of the exhibition will not take place. \nThe valid protective requirements as well as the known rules of hygiene and conduct apply. \n  \nChristian Marx Gallery \nim stilwerk \nGrünstr. 15 \n40212 Düsseldorf

SUMMARY:PARALLELE
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition in Luxembourg\nGila Paris\, director of the CULTUREINSIDE GALLERY\, is delighted to present the artists selected for the Luxembourg Art Week 2020 in her gallery in this new exhibition in Luxembourg. \n  \n  \nThis is what Gila Paris says about the artists:\n  \nBRIXY creates in his own artistic cosmos an imaginary world of the possible and draws the viewer into seas unleashed with colour\, full of natural and primitive forces\, scenarios of newly invented mythologies.\nHis organic approach to painting\, from the representation of nature to abstraction\, is what makes his success: He constantly reinvents himself without ever giving up his fundamental belief in the unity of life and work. For the artist\, art and life form a unity. \n \n  \n  \nThierry BRUET\, painter and sculptor for more than 35 years\, is a master in the classical technique of oil painting\, the realisation of great secular portraits and monumental decorative works. His works can be found with numerous collectors and in prestigious places all over the world. In the words of Nathalie Becker: “Thierry Bruet is a two-headed painter who uses irony and a delightful iconoclastic humour\, while showing an incredible mastery of oil painting that gives his works a refinement and elegance that takes your breath away. » \n \n  \n  \nJan KALAB is a Czech artist who began his career with graffiti in the early 1990s\, after the fall of the Soviet Union. His adolescence\, born in 1978\, was marked by this historical turning point and he was quickly convinced of the rise of street art\, which is synonymous with demands and freedoms. After his success in the world of street art\, Jan Kaláb obtained a master’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2006. From now on\, canvas replaced concrete and he developed a deep attraction for abstraction\, kinetic art and depth games\, combining painting and sculpture in infinite variations around the themes of time and movement. \n \n  \n  \n  \nExhibition title: PARALLELE \n  \nArtists: \nBrixy – Germany \nThierry Bruet – France \nJan Kalab – Czech Republic \n  \nDate: 14.11. – 27.02.2021

SUMMARY:MESSAGE IN A BOX
DESCRIPTION:Brixys play with the colour blue\nby Dr. Dietmar Schuth\, Museum for the colour blue\, Schwetzingen\, Germany \n  \nThe new series by Dietmar Brixy\, shown here as an impressive wall installation\, bears a mysterious title. What message might be hidden in these boxes? Many of these new pictures are built as wooden boxes and present themselves as three-dimensional painted wall objects. Other pictures in this series are mounted on the back of smaller boxes and protrude from the wall\, so that the actual picture carrier\, the wooden board\, seems to float. Their backs are additionally coloured with neon colours in orange\, yellow or pink\, which reflect on the white wall without any artificial lighting. This creates a kind of aura\, a magical glow that mysteriously surrounds every picture and almost transforms the floating state into a flying state. \n  \n \nInstallation: Message in a Box\, 2020\, oil on wood\nEven more magical\, even mythical\, are the pictures themselves.\n  \nThey are dominated by the probably most mysterious of all colours\, the colour blue. The hard wood used as the base for the pictures allows a continuous progression of the most diverse shades of blue between light cyan and dark ultramarine\, between a daylight sky blue and an evening moonlight blue. This dark blue approaches the nocturnal black and is reminiscent of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe\, who generally understood the blue of the sky as a brightened black of space. The light blue\, on the other hand\, approaches more closely the colour theory of Isaac Newton\, who understood blue as a prismatic refraction of sunlight\, as part of the colour spectrum that Brixy stages in his pictures as a paraphrase of a sunset or in the form of a meandering rainbow. \n  \n \nMessage in a Box\, 2020\, oil on wood\, 120 x 160 x 22 cm\n  \nGoethe and Newton did not like each other\, they even fought each other.\nWhile Newton today is considered the father of modern colour theory\, which is a physical science\, Goethe’s theory of colours is scientifically outdated. He understood colours rather as a psychological phenomenon and is therefore still popular today\, especially with artists who have an emotional access to colours\, do not want to know anything about the refractive index of light and do not measure their colour values as wavelengths in the nanometre range. \nDietmar Brixy is therefore close to good old Goethe in that his paintings evoke moods that cannot be measured. They connect emotionally with elementary experiences of nature\, such as the Blue Hour\, which comes to life very atmospherically in the new series “Message in a Box”. What is meant is the short time between day and twilight\, when the blue in the sky intensifies. Physicists explain this particularly beautiful blue by additional refractions of the setting sunlight at the ozone layer\, but this has only recently become known and is not generally known. More important is a physiological aspect: The light colours red and yellow quickly lose their power at dusk because they demand a lot of energy from our eyes\, but blue is a neurologically rather weak stimulus for the eye and therefore at dusk it is the last colour that our sense of colour can still recognise. \n  \n \nMessage in a Box\, 2020\, oil on wood\, 27 x 36 x 5 cm\n  \nIt was above all the 19th century Romantics who felt particularly at home in the blue hour.\nThe daytime human being loses its rationally controlled sovereignty as the light diminishes and opens up to irrational aspects\, fears and\, in the past\, superstition. Even the Brothers Grimm described blue as the colour of spirits and demons. Today all this may be forgotten and only be alive in children’s books. Also our evening sky and the night are no longer naturally illuminated. Electric light has long since chased away all witches and ghosts. But in the blue pictures of Dietmar Brixy\, a remnant of the old magic can still be felt. \nPerhaps this aspect is also one of the hidden messages of this so atmospheric wall installation\, the light pollution. Thus the many fig leaves in Dietmar Brixy’s pictures appear in a strange blue\, not green as if illuminated by the sun\, but in a transparent\, artificial blue of cold neon lamps. The fig leaf has been a major motif in Dietmar Brixy’s pictorial world for decades\, but never before has this old symbol of paradise been seen in such a strange way. It almost melts into tears and may bring a melancholic aspect to Dietmar Brixy’s Blue Hours\, which makes him a little thoughtful. \n  \nEssay about “MESSAGE IN A BOX” by Dr. Christel Heybrock \n  \nSee more works from “MESSAGE IN A BOX” here \n
